Including how accurate the vent method is.The Vent Method – Once a lovebird is about a year old you can try out the vent method. This is carried out by simply placing your index finger between the two pelvic bones of the bird very lightly and feeling for the gap. The female has a larger gap than the male as obviously she has to pass eggs through and the males will be very close together. Once you have tested a few birds you will quickly be able to spot the difference. And this method definitely works for me.Signs To Look Out For – There are many different characteristics to look out for when spotting if you have a male or female lovebird. The hens tend to sit with there feet wider on the perch and an adult female is generally more larger and aggressive. An easy way I use to find out if you have a hen is if you have an aviary. Simply add a nest box and some willow. If the hen is of age she will almost immediately start building a nest. If you have a camera set up (Be aware of some of the cheaper Chinese models, you can have a lot of problems with them. ) (I prefer an IP camera so I can watch from my pc) You will see males start to fly over and sit on the top of the nest box. Then you can either cage the female and choose which male to add to her or let her pick her own mate then add them both. Make sure you always do the vent method after you have saw these characteristics just to be sure.
