Why Wont My Lovebirds Breed?
A commonly mistaken thought my rookie breeders is thinking all it requires is to put two birds in a cage and in a few weeks time there will be chicks. There are many factors that come into breeding lovebirds and in this section we will be discussing issues that might be preventing your lovebirds from breeding. Is your pair a genuine pair? – Unless you have had your bird’s DNA sampled at the local vet it is near impossible to tell if the birds you have just brought is a genuine pair. There are ways to help determine what sex your birds are. Click Here to help read the signs.Age – Once again the only possible way to tell your birds age is if you visit a local vet. There are some who claim you can tell the age of a bird from it’s beaks shape or colour. How ever my advice would be to only by young rung birds from a reputable breeder. Female lovebirds after the age of about 5-6 years stop producing fertile eggs so this in an important factor to consider when buying breeding stock.Lighting – Lovebirds work like a machine when it comes to light. To switch a bird into breeding mode, you should aim to provide them with 12-16 hours of light a day. This will replicate the sun in summer and engage there brain into ”its time to breed”Its been a week and I have no eggs – Patience is key. After you buy your lovebirds and you know there a genuine pair, you need to allow at least 3 months for them to get established in there new environment. Only when they feel comfortable will they start to breed.Bird Food – Just as in the wild, lovebirds will react to the amount of food provided. Lovebirds are smart cookies and will know if the amount of food you provide will be enough for them to raise and sustain themselves and there young. Make sure you have enough seed, vegetables and fruits available at all times for them.
