Hand Rearing Birds Preparation
LoveBird InfoIn this section we will cover all the items you need to be fully prepared to hand rear lovebird chicksIncubator – If you plan on hatching eggs and feeding from day 1. You will need an incubator. Some breeders like to wait 2 weeks before they take the birds from the nest. This removes most of the complication as you don’t have to feed around the clock. Preferably you want to make sure you get an automatic incubator.Thermometer Stick/Wand – As the feed you will be giving your bird needs to be precise. It is recommended that you buy more than one of these so you can test exactly how accurate they are before you risk giving your bird sour crop.Brooder – If your skipping the incubator and pulling the birds at about 2 weeks, you will then need a brooder. These serve as the housing for the lovebird. A brooder is basically a box with vents that you keep the lovebirds in. You will need to have a temperature gauge in this as well as a thermostatically controlled heat pad and also bedding is very important. Make sure you pick up plenty of hygiene roll as you will need to wrap the bedding in this as well as using it to clean all of your other items. All of this will be shown in great detail in The How To hand rear section.Weighing Scales - You will need to document your chicks progress through out the weeks to make sure the young are gaining weight and progressing properlySyringes – These are fairly cheap and are readily available. Used for feeding the chicks formula until there able to start on solids or millet. Best to be on the safe side and pick up quite a few.Thermometer – It goes without saying the temperature always needs to be regulated inside your brooder. So make sure you have one of these to add to your kit.Hand Rearing Formula – Self explanatory really…..formula is used to provide the vital nutrients and minerals to make sure the chick grows up strong and healthy. You will need to provide your chick formula through a syringe until your bird is able to move onto solid food. Before you attempt this, make sure you read about the correct temperature the formula should be.Weaning Food – This should be used to make an easier transition from hand rearing mixture to solid foods. There are plenty of different reputable brands on the market. You can always send me a message if you want my advice which to choose.Hand Sanitizer – This is very important and goes without saying. Every piece of equipment you use should always been washed so that no bacteria remains. You should always clean your hands before you begin, and after you finish.Holding Pen – Last but not least you will want another rectangle box with high sides to place your birds in while you carry out maintenance such as cleaning the brooder ect.-
