Lovebird Nutrition
LoveBird InfoThe most important factor when it comes to breeding lovebirds is the birds welfare.A wide variety of nutrition sources should be readily available on a weekly basis if not daily. This will ensure the bird has the best possible chance at raising the maximum amount of strong healthy chicks that any bird breeder would be proud of. The nutritional foundation for birds is as followsSeed Mixes - There is a wide variety of types on the market. And depending on the size of your operation, I will be pointing out some of the best types in my experience. Brands that bring out the best in your birds and we will also be looking at whole sale un branded options that could save you a lot of money.Egg Mix - A vital source of specific nutrients designed solely to cater to the needs of raising healthy young birds. We will be looking into what the individual ingredients are. Such as Vitamin C, Biotin,Folic acid, Copper, Zinc, Calcium, Iodine, Magnesium and many others. And seeing how exactly they benefit the birds.Mineral Block – Another way to get minerals into your lovebirds is with a mineral block, the birds love to bite on them and they provide an excellent way to sharpen the birds beak at the same time. You should always have one of these in your cage/aviary as well as cuttlebone to keep the birds beak healthy.Fruits And Veg - Another vital source of nutrients that cannot be overlooked when keeping lovebirds. There are many different types that you can try with your lovebirds. And it’s generally trial and error when introducing new types of fruit and vegetables as to if the birds take to it.Water Solutions - Many breeders like to add a calcium solution to the birds drinking water once a week to ensure the birds bones are in top condition and eggs have the best chance of forming correctly.Oyster Shell/ Grit – Another must have to ensure the birds are healthy is ground oyster shell or grit. This helps the birds digestion greatly so make sure you always have a pot full available to the birds at all times.Hemp – Perfect for mixing in with your seed mix or keeping single in a pot of it’s own. You will see this go down rapidly when your birds are about to rear young. Packed with lots of essential natural goodness.Millet – Possibly a birds favourite food. Lovebirds go mental for this type of seed and simply the more millet sprigs you give them the better. It appeals to them because of it’s natural look and the fact that grass seeds make up 90% of a birds diet in the wild.Pellet – Sometimes the preferred choice among breeders. A great way to ensure your birds get the right amount of fruit, veg and seed is to provide them with pellets. My advice would be to provide the pellets that all consist of the same composition. This is without doubt the best way to prevent selective feeding from your lovebirds.
